Spencer Schoeneman – The Rhythmic Engineer

Welcome

Rhythmic Engineer

noun

  1. A person who designs, builds, or maintains the rhythmic or percussive content of a musical work.

See also: Drummer.

I see my job in any playing situation as that of an engineer. I approach each piece of music and evaluate it’s structure, investigate it’s unique properties, and consider it’s environment. I then design and apply the appropriate rhythmic infrastructure that I feel will best complement and support the music.

In performance

When performing, I focus on the foundation and progression of the music.

Foundation
As a rhythm section player, my job is to support the rest of the band. I do this by focusing on consistent time and playing a solid groove. This helps to create a foundation on which the other members of the band can perform with confidence and ease.

Progression
As the most powerful instrument on the stage, it is the drummer’s job to guide all dynamic progression during the performance. This means the drummer needs to know where the song is heading at all times in order to set up any feel or dynamic changes.

In Business

I hold myself to a high standard in all areas of my professional life. Punctuality, preparedness, communication, professionalism, and humility are all traits I strive to embody. I approach every professional interaction and performance with the same mind set: everything is an audition.
